Rabbit Travelogue: Prologue (4 channel Video installation)

Rabbit is forced to leave his home and hence forced to be a traveler. In fact, he doesn’t go anywhere; just his mood and identity are slightly changed, becomes a stranger in his hometown.

He doesn’t have any choices indeed. Witnessing the places turning into ruins, all of the memories, images and sound becoming the emptiness and nothingness, the only thing Rabbit can do is drifting and using his ears in listening carefully.

Prologue: it is about the escape of Rabbit from the empty space of Wong Chuk Hang to the last days of Queen Pier, the occasion of mourning of Tiananmen massacre, 71 demonstrations and the gathering of Anti-High Speed Rail Movement.

Rabbit Travelogue: Through the fictional character Rabbit who engages in different occasion and spot, the project documents this fictional character drifting into the scenes of reality and facing the powerless of inability of changing status quo. This is the record of this fictional character bringing us the helplessness of reality.

(2009, Hong Kong, Color, HDV)

Language: Cantonese

Duration: 90 mins

Synopsis:

The so called “relationship” doesn’t existed, but only fictional relationship throughout the whole process: Rabbit is jumping through the hole of time, turning into the awakening of a lady, Mei, who gradually realizes herself living in the ambiguity of her life. Plainclothes policeman, Jing, remembers his past failure 8 years ago while he is investigating an ordinary food poison case. He traps into the casual relationship between present and past, devotes himself for the useless redemption and imagination for the suspect of the case, Mei. Ying, the younger sister of Mei, is losing her way, her love, her reliable sister, no way out, giving up is the only exit. Ching, the wife of Jing, who supposed to be outsider, her identity is the only thing of her: as the wife of Jing, as the mother of her son and the made-up relationship with Yin, a policeman in the police station, through other’s eyes. The longing for cutting and wiping out all of them, to reborn from death, is shutting down all relationship. In fact, is there nothing more than a dead female body for so much imagination, more stories inside her mind and more possibility for such reading for relationship?

From the processed soundwalks to the demonstration of Queen Pier (one of the historical symbol and public space in Hong Kong), and ending with the demonstration of Anti-express national railway outside Legislative Council in Hong Kong, this release tries to express the artist’s personal sentiment toward the current status and the destruction in Hong Kong: “a city forgets the past, its future will not be beautirful.” (from the banner of exhibition “Coming Near you: The Destruction of Central Hong Kong”, 2005)

Duration: 46’45

Field recordings are recorded between July, 2007 – January, 2010 in Sheung Wan and Central.
Composed by Edwin Lo.
Cover design by Jimmy Lo.
